What is Agentic commerce?
Agentic commerce is the emerging model in which an AI assistant completes a purchase on a shopper's behalf — discovering products, comparing options, and placing the order inside the conversation — rather than handing the shopper off to a website to buy. The brand remains the merchant of record: it keeps the customer relationship, processes the payment through its existing processor, and fulfils the order. The agent is a new checkout client, not a reseller. Agentic commerce sits on top of the AI shopping feed as a transaction layer: the feed handles discovery (getting a SKU surfaced and cited), and the agentic layer handles the sale (letting the shopper approve and the agent execute). By mid-2026 the major assistants — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot — all support some form of in-conversation checkout, most commonly inherited by merchants through their commerce platform rather than implemented directly.
How it relates to AI UGC
Even when checkout is automated, the shopper still approves the purchase against the visual answer card. The in-hand and in-scene lifestyle images ppl.studio generates carry the 'this is right for me' signal at that approve step — the last thing the shopper sees before spending money — so AI UGC remains a conversion lever in agentic commerce, not just a discovery one.
Key statistics
- Agentic commerce is a transaction layer on top of the AI shopping feed — a feed good enough to be cited is not automatically good enough to be bought.
- Most mid-size brands acquire agentic checkout through their commerce platform (e.g. Shopify or a large marketplace) rather than by implementing a protocol directly.
- Price or stock drift between the feed (a cache) and the live checkout (the source of truth) is the leading cause of dropped agent-placed orders.
