What is Visual commerce?

Visual commerce is the use of imagery, video, and interactive visual formats as the primary mechanism of an online purchase decision rather than as decoration around a text description. It covers shoppable imagery, 360-degree and 3D product views, augmented-reality placement and try-on, video product pages, and user-submitted photography surfaced alongside reviews.

The rationale is that online retail removed the sensory information physical retail provides, and visual formats are the closest available substitute for handling a product. The categories where it pays are those where uncertainty drives hesitation and returns — furniture, where scale in a room is the question; apparel and eyewear, where fit is; cosmetics, where shade is. Measurable gains show up in conversion and in reduced return rates, and the second is often the larger financial effect. The cost side is production and maintenance: 3D assets and AR models are per-SKU investments that go stale as catalogues turn over, which is why visual commerce tends to be adopted for hero products first rather than across a full catalogue.

How it relates to AI UGC

AI UGC is the engine of visual commerce for brands that can't afford traditional lifestyle photography for every SKU and channel. Generate product-in-scene imagery at scale, fill product page galleries, create shoppable social content, and build the visual experience that modern shoppers expect—all from a single tool.

Key statistics

  • Product pages with visual UGC see 111% higher conversion rates than those without (Yotpo).
  • 67% of consumers say the quality of a product image is 'very important' in selecting and purchasing a product (Justuno).
