What is Zero-click search?
A zero-click search is a search query that is answered inside the search results page without the user clicking through to a website — the answer is delivered via a featured snippet, knowledge panel, AI Overview, AI Mode response, Map Pack, or similar SERP feature. Zero-click rates have climbed steadily for a decade and accelerated sharply with generative AI surfaces: SimilarWeb's 2024 study found ~58% of Google searches in the U.S. ended without a click to any site. For brands, zero-click is a paradox: visibility inside zero-click surfaces is increasingly the only visibility available for top-of-funnel queries, but it doesn't deliver direct traffic. The strategic response is to optimize for citation and brand recall inside zero-click surfaces (so users remember the brand name for direct/branded follow-up) rather than only counting click-through traffic. This is a major driver behind the rise of AI search visibility / GEO as a discipline distinct from traditional SEO.
Key statistics
- ~58% of U.S. Google searches end without a click to any external site (SimilarWeb 2024 analysis of 1B+ search sessions).
- AI Overviews appear on ~30% of commercial queries and increase zero-click rate by an additional 15–25 percentage points on those queries (Semrush AI Overviews tracker, 2025).
- Brand recall lift from being cited inside an AI Overview is comparable to a #1 organic ranking — even without the click (Search Engine Land case studies, 2025).
