What is Content credentials?
Content credentials are the cryptographically signed provenance manifest attached to an image or video file by the C2PA standard — a tamper-evident record of what created the asset (camera, AI model, editor), when, and who signed off on publication. Unlike a caption or a poster-side toggle, content credentials live inside the file itself as signed metadata: platforms read the manifest at upload and use it to auto-apply their AI-content label, so the label the audience sees is downstream of the credential the file carries. By mid-2026, Meta, TikTok, YouTube, and LinkedIn all read content credentials in the ingest path; assets shipped without them ingest as ‘unknown provenance’ and rely solely on the poster toggle for disclosure, which platforms treat as weaker evidence. Content credentials are the machine layer of AI-content disclosure — the caption line and on-image bug remain the human layers.
